Former world No 1 Kim Clijsters has declared a shock comeback to tennis following a seven-year hiatus, at the age of 36.
The Belgian, who initially returned to competitive tennis a couple of years after following her first child’s arrival, is currently in training with plans to compete on tour in 2020.
Clijsters has revealed she has been motivated by the success of moms on tour, including Serena Williams and won three Grand Slam titles on her return to the sport before hanging her up .
“In 36 years old, I feel like I’m too young to be retired, and with numerous motivational athletes and mums competing,” Clijsters, who has since had two more children, told the WTA Tour.
“I can’t wait to get back on the game court and see what is potential after having three kids.”
Clijsters won her first Grand Slam title after four runner-up finishes in majors in her’ career’ at the US Open in 2005 and away from the tour after 26 months started a successful comeback.
She won her second Grand Slam title in just her comeback occasion, until she defended against the US Open and then won the 2011 Australian Open.
Clijsters, who has won 41 singles titles is eligible for wildcards and will have to play three tournaments or earn 10 rank points to re-establish a position.
