As England U21s began their Euro 2021 qualifying effort with a 3-2 victory in 20, eddie Nketiah scored two goals.
Frustration was suffered by aidy Boothroyd’s team even though having a crop of prospects as they were knocked from the European Championship from the group stages and it seemed like that feeling might survive on Friday night, in the summer.
Six members of the group for the qualifiers of the month have played with the Young Lions – Nketiah one of them.
The striker put England ahead and, though Turkey turned the game round, Nketiah and Reiss Nelson struck in rapid succession to secure the triumph.
England started well and went ahead after only four minutes following a good move between Steven Sessegnon and then Phil Foden the left side of the penalty area; Foden’s low cross was missed by two Turkish defenders letting Nketiah to stab the ball home from seven yards out.
Nelson had an opportunity to score although the teams went to the interval level after Dogukan Sinik raced clear and scored following 25 minutes.
England made a slow start and they paid the cost six minutes after the restart. A well-worked corner watched Mert Muldur get away from his mark and his run into the post watched him flick the ball.
But, into the game turned on its head. Foden had been the architect darting goalwards before threading a beautiful pass to Nketiah inside the penalty area and the Arsenal ahead, on loan Leeds, given a tidy finish.
Afterwards, Nelson netted what was the winning goal with a low shot that might have taken a deflection off a Turkish defender.
