Eddie Nketiah scored just two goals since England U21s started their Euro 2021 qualifying effort with a 3-2 success in Turkey.
Aidy Boothroyd’s team suffered frustration at the summer it looked like that feeling could survive on Friday night and since they were knocked from the Championship from the group stages, despite having a new crop of prospects given a opportunity.
Six members of this group to the qualifiers of this month have previously played the Young Lions – Nketiah among them.
The striker put England forward and, although Turkey turned the game around, Nketiah and Reiss Nelson struck to secure the win.
England started well and went ahead after only four minutes following a good move between Steven Sessegnon and then Phil Foden the left side of the playground; Foden’s low cross was missed by 2 Turkish defenders enabling Nketiah to stab the ball home from seven yards out.
The teams went into the interval level after Dogukan Sinik scored after 25 minutes and dashed clear although nelson had an opportunity to score.
England made a start and they paid the cost six minutes after the restart. A corner saw Mert Muldur eliminate his marker and his rush to the post saw him flick the ball beyond Aaron Ramsdale.
But, two goals in as many minutes turned into the game on its mind. Foden has been the architect , darting goalwards before threading a pass at Leeds only and that the Arsenal ahead, on loan to Nketiah, provided a finish.
Instantly Nelson netted what proved to be the winning goal with a low shot that might have taken a deflection off a guardian that was Turkish.
