Eddie Nketiah scored just two goals as England U21s began their Euro 2021 qualifying campaign with a 3-2 success in Turkey.
The team of aidy Boothroyd endured frustration at the summer since they were knocked out of the Championship in the group stages and it looked like that atmosphere could survive on Friday night.
Six members of their squad for the qualifiers of this month have played with the Young Lions – Nketiah among them.
Even the striker put England forward and, although Turkey turned the match around, Nketiah and Reiss Nelson struck in rapid succession to secure the triumph.
England started well and went ahead after just four minutes following a good move involving Steven Sessegnon along with Phil Foden the side of the penalty area; Foden’s low cross was missed by 2 Turkish defenders allowing Nketiah to stab the ball home from seven yards out.
Nelson had an opportunity to score of the teams went into the interval level after Dogukan Sinik scored following 25 minutes and dashed clear.
England made a slow start and they paid the price six minutes. A corner saw Mert Muldur get away from his mark and his free run to the near post watched him flick the ball beyond Aaron Ramsdale.
But, into the match turned on its mind. Foden was the architect , darting goalwards before threading a pass in the penalty area only to Nketiah and the Arsenal forward, on loan in Leeds, given a finish.
Instantly after, Nelson netted what proved to be the winning goal with a low shot that may have taken a deflection off a Turkish guardian.
