England U21 head trainer Aidy Boothroyd says before revealing the Manchester United forward is sharing a space with club rival Phil Foden on international duty he’s been impressed with Mason Greenwood.
With the United forward earning his to Boothroyd’s side greenwood along with Manchester City midfielder Foden are included for the very first time.
The 17-year-old has featured in all of the matches of United this season, such as an impressive ten-minute cameo against Southampton on Saturday.
“He’s a very, very gifted player,” Boothroyd stated. “He walks through the door and you immediately like him because he is such a humble, pleasant young bloke.
“He’s rooming together with Phil funnily enough that’s the two Manchester lads getting together and performing for England as well as residing together for a couple of months too.
“Mason’s a terrific talent, we have just had one session but he looks very striking and will surely add to the armoury we’ve got.”
Nineteen-year-old Foden has featured 19 times in the Premier League for City since making his debut. Boothroyd says that his situation is not one to be worried about, despite struggling this year.
“Phil’s working with the top gamers in the world and arguably the best coach in the world so he’s going to have a good deal of positives out of that,” he added.
“He is not playing games but I think City and Pep [Guardiola] understand what to do together better than maybe I would because they watch of him than I do.”
Considering that the summer’s disappointing Championship effort – that saw the team depart of Boothroyd the championship at the group stage – three members of that squad were called up to the older side.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Mount and James Maddison have been selected by Gareth Southgate, and Boothroyd thinks there’s never been a better time to make the step from the U21s.
“It is wonderful for me although we had the disappointment of their summer, three stars have come from it. They’re all really fantastic characters and I am absolutely thrilled for them,” he explained.
“There’s never been a better time to be an England player with a man who’s brave enough to play them in Gareth.
“I think that they’re three very talented players and they make the most of themselves. They’re working .
“They deservedly got to the England team and now they have to do that last bit of getting to the group and receiving a couple caps under their belt.”
The U21s kick-off their European qualifying campaign with a trip to Turkey on Friday, until three days afterwards they go home to play with with Kosovo at Hull.
