Tuesday marked Cam Newton’s return to projecting facing reporters after the second shoulder surgery of his career in January.
Newton had supposedly reworked his throwing motion during the rehabilitation process, a change that NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported had made those within the Panthers building”giddy.”
On Tuesday, Newton”unveiled” his tightened casting mechanisms during Carolina’s first day of mandatory minicamp. Behold:Per colleagues on the scene at Charlotte, Newton threw around 30 passes during the approximately 25-minute semester to stationary targets with a more compact motion; targets weren’t moving that Newton could revolve around maintaining his cries in form, NFL Network’s Tiffany Blackmon reported.
It’s only his first practice back, and there is no telling what Newton’s throwing motion will look like come September when the bullets are flying, but the Panthers are impressed with the quarterback’s advancement regardless.
“The shoulder started to go (last year ), you then began to see everything fall to the wayside. Now he’s an opportunity to go back, rework those things, do exactly the things that he needs to do to improve,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera told reporters. “He has done a great job and we’re really excited about it.
“As I said, this is simply the first step of many and we’re really looking forward to tomorrow to find out how much more he’s going to perform.”
The Panthers skipper added to Blackmon that Newton felt”great” after practice.
Rivera could not provide any details concerning the particulars of Newton’s reworked mechanics, joking,”I can provide you a rundown on handling .” The Panthers coach did state that his message into Cam during minicamp is to continue doing what he has been doing.
“I’d love to see him continue to follow his casting method,” Rivera added. “How he throws the ball, I think he throws a nice, tight spiral when all is how it is supposed to be and that’s what he is working for so we’re just excited to see him just grow and develop.”
Carolina expects Newton’s return to form is twofold. A healthy Cam should cede to a successful Cam, like the one who was completing 67 percent of his passes with a 15:4 TD-INT ratio during the Panthers’ first eight games in 2018, his first effort under offensive coordinator Norv Turner.
Asked if Newton was back on path to enjoying he did throughout the early fall of 2018, Rivera was definitive.
“Absolutely,” the trainer said. “As Norv said, I believe the biggest thing moreso than anything else would be that you saw the expansion, you saw the development. He’ll now be in the next year in the system. Understanding exactly what he wants to perform as a quarterback, decisions he needs to make, is going to dictate a lot about his throwing style as well.”
One day down, 88 to go till Carolina kicks off from the Los Angeles Rams. For Newton, that’s 88 chances to improve and receive right.
