They point the largest golf events in Europe, but what is the long term legacy? Is it that they vanish from significance shortly after being centre of the golf globe?
These are questions worth thinking about that Le Golf National plays host to the Open for the first time because the massive victory over the United States of the continent .
1 thing is for sure, this autumnal running of their oldest national Open in continental Europe wont be as expansive.
The tournament was shifted from a prime position in the schedule at the end of June and its currently worth just #1.4m compared using the #5.6m purse that was played last year.
Make no mistake, there will be important golf on show. The scramble qualify to Dubai finale for the Race and to keep cards is intensifying.
Along with also the likes of Jose Maria Olazabal, Martin Kaymer, Thomas Bjorn and Jamie Donaldson include some stardust.
But if Alex Noren won 15 months he beat a field that included defending champion Tommy Fleetwood, Spanish giants Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia, US star Justin Thomas along with Ryder Cup stalwart Ian Poulter.
Bjorn returns to the scene of the team success as one of the chief playing attractions instead of main strategist for an outstanding European victory.
That 171/2-101/2 triumph generated scenes and lifelong memories to inspire future generations. The class – setup perfectly to match the home club – and the location near Paris played huge roles in making for golfing.
However, it feels as though places that staged home games into obscurity may be followed by Le Golf National. Courses which were once principles around the circuit have faded out of significance.
The Ryder Cup was hosted by the Belfry and whatever you consider the course, which does have its founders, the first design from the midlands became a big portion of the fabric of golfing history.
However, a Tour event has not been staged by the Brabazon Course because the 2008 British Specialists. Celtic Manor in Wales disappeared following its Ryder Cup, four decades from the schedule in 2014.
The K Club, which hosted the 2006 match in County Kildare, has been the European Open between 1995 and 2007s continuous house. When the Open was held by it it disappeared from the calendar other than in 2016.
Gleneagles staged this years Solheim Cup and the 2018 European Team Championships before putting around the 2014 Ryder Cup, but its deal to hold tour events expired.
Only Valderrama (1997 Ryder Cup) in southern Spain has remained a standard stop for the continents top players in the wake of holding among the biennial jousts between Europe and the US.
So the portents are not good at a time once the French Opens worth has somewhat diminished, especially for Le Golf National.
The French Federation signed a 12-year bargain that would have taken them to 2022.
This crashed with the loss of host Alstom, however, for 2016 the European Tour gained a more lucrative deal with Chinese conglomerate HNA. The five-year agreement values 25m euros appeared to fasten the top-level standing of the event.
But that deal fell through departing this historical tournament no longer able to justify a spot in the elite Rolex Series of the tour. So it stays at this October date detached in the limelight it commanded.
The change of date is acceptable, the largest tournaments ought to have the best dates, Pascal Grizot, president of Frances 2018 Ryder Cup committee, confessed to LEquipe this past calendar year.
The European Tour didnt do more to encourage the championship, but the official questioned. Why did not they decide to help the French Open and the federation since we were extremely loyal to the Ryder Cup? He asked.
The simple response comes down to money, like with former Ryder Cup venues. There is money generated to put these areas in the map but it vanishes after the goal of Maintaining the largest event of golf has been fulfilled.
It might prove a story for Le Golf National. According to following years schedule that the French Open will return into summer, however there isnt any word on which path will stage the tournament nor the size of its handbag.
Places instantly resonate with golf lovers K Club, The Belfry, Celtic Manor, Gleneagles and now potentially Le Golf National are all not simply venues that have carved places in the match folklore.
They also supply proof that business reality leaves room for nurturing and preserving that golfing history.
